This expanding regional law firm seemed landlocked within its long-time downtown Huntsville location until local developer Raymond Jones and partners came up with an innovative way to use a pedestrian bridge to connect old with new – an available adjacent building site where a 16,000 square-foot addition could meet the firm’s space needs for the foreseeable future. JS Building Co. was tapped as construction manager for the new office at the outset of the project. Several budgeting rounds were needed in proforma support to the developer.
Construction Management
The project designed by Chapman Sisson Architects consisted of a two-story shell building with Class A tenant build-out and pedestrian bridge crossing the city street, Fountain Row. JS Building Co. worked closely with the Owner and Architect team to vet a solid list of Subs and Vendors for competitive pricing, resulting in a solid building team to execute the work.
The work area required a high level of supervision because of the close quarters of the area and the tight adjacency of two property lines. Laydown area and scheduling also were a high priority to keep the construction in budget and on schedule.

On Schedule
The new building wrapped up on schedule despite weather challenges in the prior spring season. JS Building Co. developed several innovative techniques to allow interior work to precede the completion of the envelope without fear of damage to the interior work or resulting quality. The schedule was recaptured.
The unique pedestrian bridge spans 105lf and gives users a view of Huntsville with windows along each full length of the span. The bridge steel frame was built off-site and transported predawn across town for a one-day “bridge raising.”
Additional Work
Once completed, Maynard Cooper principals were so pleased with the results that JS Building Co. and Chapman Sisson Architects were asked to renovate the interior conference rooms in the existing building. New lighting, floor covering, ceilings and wall covering updated the large conference rooms to function for multipurpose use.
